It is our distinct pleasure to share with you the outstanding news that Charles M. Rice, PhD, a renowned virologist who conducted his seminal work while on the faculty of the School of Medicine, is one of three scientists who received the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine earlier today. Rice becomes the 19th Nobel laureate associated with the School of Medicine, and the 25th from Washington University.
Along with his colleagues, Rice was honored for the discovery of the hepatitis C virus. The Nobel Assembly said this morning that the discovery led to medical advances that “have saved millions of lives.” You can read more about Rice, his research and the prize in a news release here.
We are both excited to celebrate this accomplishment for Charles Rice, the School of Medicine, Washington University, and the advancement of medical research in support of human health. The Nobel Prize is among the highest distinctions awarded to any individual, and we are extraordinarily proud of this accomplishment by an esteemed member of our faculty.
